Fabric tape with military-proven strength

Fabric tape is a special type of packing tape that is suitable for many different purposes. First and foremost, it is characterised by its particularly high adhesive strength and robustness. For this reason, you may also find this tape with designations such as multifunctional adhesive tape, general-purpose adhesive tape, craftsman's adhesive tape or duct tape. In German, it is also referred to as “Panzertape” (tank tape), a name derives from the fact that the development of fabric tapes is linked to the high demands of the military sector. On this page we would like to inform you about the many advantages and application possibilities of Supra-Ratiopac’s fabric tapes.

Fabric adhesive tape: advantages and applications

In addition to good adhesion and high flexibility as well as tear resistance, fabric tape impresses with its easy handling. It is a reliable solution for various applications. For example, if a surface is to be repaired that has small holes or cracks. The same applies to insulation, sealing and various technical applications. This multifunctional all-round genius can be torn transversely and shortened accordingly. It can cope with various materials and can be used on uneven, rough or fibrous surfaces as well as in combination with moisture. Despite this insensitivity to moisture, care should be taken to ensure that the surface is dry and free of dust and grease when bonding. As this special adhesive tape is not UV-resistant, proper storage is particularly important.

Long-lasting adhesion thanks to synthetic rubber

Synthetic rubber has a very special molecular structure, making it ideal for the development and manufacture of fabric and other adhesive tapes. More precisely, this property is due to the arrangement of the molecular chain: there are two hard styrene molecules (also: phenylethane) at both ends and a relatively soft part of butadiene in the middle. Depending on the ratio chosen between the two components, the synthetic rubber is stiffer or more flexible at the end. As with natural rubber, resins that act as "tackifiers" must also be added to the synthetic variant. Only then, it can become adhesive tape, such as our fabric tape.

The reason why synthetic rubber adhesives are so popular in the manufacture of adhesive tapes is their high adhesive strength. In concrete terms, this means a reliable hold on various surfaces. Shear strength is also above average. Accordingly, the corresponding fabric tape does not slip from its  when subjected to lateral loads. Another advantage: Adhesive tapes with synthetic rubber adhesive have a high initial adhesive strength, which is also known under the technical term tack.

Why is fabric tape often silver?

An interesting fact about fabric tape has to do with its mostly silver colour, which it has in common with various other repair tapes. This is due to the fact that fabric tapes have often been used in civilian applications to repair hot-dip galvanised pipes with holes or small cracks. The same applies, for example, to ventilation ducts, which also often have a zinc coating. Accordingly, adhesive tape with the same colour does not jump directly into the eye of the observer.
